Baggins Blog (BB): Care to introduce yourself?
Ashley Gelaude (AG): Hello there, I’m Ashley Gelaude :) I’m a 26-year-old musician, nerd and videographer born and raised right here in Victoria!
BB: How would you describe your personal style?
AG: "Casual" and "alternative" are the first words that spring to mind. I generally keep things pretty simple, but I do love to dress up whenever I get the chance. Vans and Chucks are for sure a daily thing.
BB: Can you tell us about your first pair of Converse, Vans or Dr. Martens?
AG: I sure can! My first pair of Chucks were the classic high-tops. I got them when I was 12 and wore them religiously. I remember my gym teacher telling me I couldn’t wear them in gym class and I fought it because honestly, I didn’t really feel comfortable in anything else.
BB: What's your favourite thing to do in your hometown?
AG: Exploring nature, making music with local friends/musicians and attending shows.
BB: You play the drums! Can you tell us what drew you to the instrument?
AG: In middle school, I had the choice of taking Home Economics or Music. Although I do love to cook, sewing was not at all my thing and I decided to take up the trumpet. My music teacher recognized how restless I was and thought I’d be happier in the percussion section. Around the same time my older sister took up drumming and I was really inspired by her. It was one of those ‘monkey-see, monkey-do’ things. After that, I just never stopped.
BB: Who or what do you take inspiration from?
AG: I primarily draw inspiration from the amazing people in my life who support me. Nothing gets me more fired up than the people I love and care about believing in me. It makes me want to be the best possible version of myself in all aspects of life.
BB: If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
AG: This is a tough one for me because any answer I have feels really selfish. I think cloning myself would be my ideal superpower. There is so much I want to see, accomplish and do in a day but there is NEVER enough time. That, or to be able to live without needing sleep (for the same reasons of course).
BB: What's the craziest/best/most different thing you've done in a pair of Converse?
AG: I almost exclusively wear Converse and Vans (although I do love a good pair of heels) so a lot of my craziest, best and most different life experiences have been while rocking my sneakers. There are too many to name but a very memorable one was hiking Mount Work in a pair of low-top chucks. The whole way up the mountain people would stop me and tell me that I was crazy for hiking in Converse, but I was a pretty happy girl :)
BB: What advice would you give any musicians on breaking into "the scene"?
AG: Remain genuine. Stay authentic. Never underestimate the value of good relationships. Always ask what more you can do for the world around you, and not what more the world can do for you.

BB: If you could meet anyone, alive or dead, who would it be?
AG: Sorry to get heavy on you, but I’d love the chance to spend some time with my father again. I lost him very suddenly less than two years ago and there are a lot of questions and conversations I feel like I missed out on. Love you big guy, miss you more every day.
BB: Any final things you'd like to add?
