Q: I am spanking new to the brand, what is the basic style?
A: Dr. Martens has been around for over 60 years and the brand's purpose has adjusted over time to fit the needs of its clientele. However, the one element that remains consistent is their two staples: 1460 and 1461. Getting their names from the very first production date - April 1st, 1960 and April 1st, 1961 - these two silhouettes are the bread and butter of the brand and an absolute must-have for folks who fancy themselves a ~classic~.
The Dr. Martens 1460 Smooth Leather Hi Top Black and Dr. Martens 1461 Smooth Leather Low Top Black- are the most versatile options. These shoes feature the thicker Smooth Leather that's most used in their catalog. They do take some time to break in, so we recommend grabbing some Wonder Balsam to help with this. Once you get past this minor inconvenience, these shoes will form to your foot and become incredibly comfortable, lasting for years and years. They feature the signature yellow stitching and Dr. Martens patented welt AirWair sole, which means you are getting the authentic Docs experience in either of these.
Q: I love the look of Docs but breaking them in takes too long and is quite the process. Are there any alternatives?
A: Dr. Martens recognized that not everyone was willing to endure Punk Rock style blisters and raw heels for the perfect pair of shoes. So, they brought in the Pascal. This option is mostly featured in women’s styles - it’s a soft, malleable leather that still looks great and holds up over time.
The Dr. Martens Women’s Pascal Virginia Leather Hi Top Black is the best option for someone who wants to maintain the classic look with the yellow stitching and classic silhouette but offers a soft leather to ease the breaking-in period. Another soft-leather pair of Docs that we have available is the Dr. Martens Women’s 1B99 Virginia Leather Hi Top Black for someone wanting a knee-high boot.
Q: I prefer to try to reduce or eliminate animal products from my life, are there options for consumers such as myself?
A: YES! Dr. Martens offers 100% certified vegan options, meaning that absolutely no animal products are used anywhere in the manufacturing process. While there are many vegan options available at Baggins, we feature the Dr. Martens Vegan 1460 High Top Black Felix Rub Off and the Dr. Martens Vegan Jadon II Mono Black as our two staples. If neither of these interests you, we can investigate special orders to better fit your needs.
Q: Are there different styles for different seasons?
A: Yes, Dr. Martens has weatherized options for the winter months and sandals for the warmer weather. The Dr. Martens 2976 DM’s Winter Grip Snowplow Leather Cocoa is a slip-on Chelsea boot with an anti-slip sole for ice and snow and a fleece liner to ensure your toes stay warm. We also offer more classic options such as the Dr. Martens Women’s Serena Wyoming Leather Hi Top Black.
On the flip side, Dr. Martens is continually expanding their sandal selection. With options for men and women, we recommend the Dr. Martens Myles Brando Sandal Black. We also have some fresh new options arriving later this year (pssst... in April) so be sure to check back.
Q: Are there budget-friendly options that are still great boots?
A: Dr. Martens introduced their casuals line to offer a budget-friendly selection that was still up to their rigorous standards in terms of durability and style. Baggins carries the Combs boot in both leather and ballistic canvas options, and we recently introduced the Embury Chelsea boot. You can also expect some low-profile boot options arriving in Spring/Summer 2021.
Q: I’m looking for something to show my personality besides Black or Brown, is there options for me?
A: Every season, Dr. Martens bring in some seasonal coloured leather - currently we have Acid Pink, Peppermint, and Steel Grey. Every 6 months or so we order new colours, prints, and textures to allow you to showcase your own style and personality. One of our personal favourites is the Dr. Martens Womens 1460 Pascal Sequin Boot Rainbow Multi/Silver. This fun boot has flip sequins that are either multi-coloured rainbow or sparkly silver.
There you go! Hopefully, this has offered you some guidance to find your perfect pair of Docs, and of course, if you have any specific questions we’d love to hear from you.
