We welcome our latest floral addition to our lineup of Baggins Original designs, Baggins Original Hi Tops Woodblock Bird. We sourced artwork from a public domain archive of Polychrome Woodblocks of Itō Jakuchū Birds
These beautiful polychrome woodblock prints are Meiji era copies (ca. 1900) of original designs (ca. 1771) by Itō Jakuchū (1716–1800), a Japanese painter of the mid-Edo period notable for his striking modern aesthetic.
Woodblock printing involved multiple people collaborating: first, the artist would design the piece, then hand it off to the carver who would etch the artwork onto woodblocks, one for each colour. The ink was then mixed by hand, and the printer, or surishi, would apply the ink to the carved blocks using brushes or rollers, and press the paper to each block, carefully applying colour layers, producing an intricate and vibrant print that could be reproduced with accuracy.
Each shoe is made to order with love by a member of our trusty staff, using a patented process at our print shop.
