ARTIST COLLABORATION: TERRELL BROADNAX
We are beyond excited to share with you our newest Artist Collaborator, and shoe salesman extraordinaire, Terrell Broadnax! Not only is Terrell an amazing designer and artist, but he’s also a part of the Baggins store gang! Terrell came to us at the beginning of this year and it’s been a joy getting to work with him. We were able to sit down and get to know more about the legend himself, including his signature art style, fave things to do around Victoria, and what keeps him inspired.
To find out even more cool facts about Terrell, keep reading…
(BB) Baggins Blog: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself - How did you get your start in illustration? Any random facts we should know about you?
(TB) Terrell Broadnax: I actually started off in fashion design of all things before sticking with graphic design, the college I went to had to cancel the program and it was either find a new degree or leave and I chose graphic design. Growing up I always loved to draw or doodle on any surface, whether it was trying out different graffiti or practicing my favourite manga characters I just loved the feeling of designing and being creative.
(BB): Can you tell us a little about how you found your signature style?
(TB): As of now, I wouldn’t really call it a “style” I tend to have a good eye for design as well as draw inspiration from all areas of pop culture.
(BB): What is your favourite thing about being an artist?
(TB): The fact that I get to solve problems in my own way and that there is no perfect way to design something. Just because one person hates an idea, another could absolutely love it so it can be tough sometimes finding the right people to show your work but when you do it’s a great feeling.
(BB): Can you talk us through your Artist Collaboration with Baggins?
(TB): Liquid art is something that I came across a few years ago when I was coincidentally scrolling through the Instagram explore page and I have been hooked ever since. The cool thing about liquid art is there is no perfect way to do it, once you learn the techniques it’s pretty simple but to me, that’s what makes it so cool because whether it was planned or not you can come out with some beautiful and mesmerizing liquid art just by playing around and mixing colours.
(BB): Why Converse? Any self-defining moments made in any of these kicks? – or – Can you tell us about your first pair?
(TB): If you are around my age then in high school you thought Wiz Khalifa was the coolest rapper in the world and when he said that you aren’t real if you don’t own a pair of “Taylor’s” best believe I purchased three pairs that week.
(BB): What is your favourite thing to do in your city?
(TB): Thrift and eat Korean food.
(BB): Who have you been listening to recently?
(TB): Robb Banks, Sahbabii, Playboi Carti, and any good house music I can find.
(BB): What are you currently watching on Netflix?
(TB): Just finished the Snowpiercer series and can’t wait for season 2, Brooklyn 99 is a great show when I’m not really paying attention and I’m slowly trying to watch all the Studio Ghibli movies I missed out on as a kid! (Spirited Away, Howls Moving Castle, My Neighbor Totoro)
(BB): Can you tell us about the space where you create?
(TB): Well, I’m actually in the middle of moving so, unfortunately, my comfy couch isn’t with us anymore but I’m pretty flexible with my workspace as long as there is an outlet nearby and it’s not a loud crowded area, I can make almost anywhere work.
(BB): What are the circumstances where you feel most inspired?
(TB): Honestly, I can’t turn it off, I’m always inspired. As long as the earth keeps moving I’ll have things to work with.
(BB): Is there something you can’t live without in your studio?
(TB): Internet connection. I’m heavily influenced by the world around me and I grab inspiration from the most random places whether it be movies, music, sports, or fashion I try to keep track of it all. I also try to not put myself in a box when it comes to new content and between my phone, laptop, and iPad I keep a pretty decent sized mood board.
(BB): What inspires you? How do you stay inspired?
(TB): Fashion inspires me honestly, a lot of the work I have planned does involve me working with clothing and it’s the reason that I think graphic design was a good lane for me.
(BB): If you were a crayon, what colour would you be?
(TB): Turquoise or a nice purple.
(BB): What was the best concert you’ve ever attended?
(TB): Travis Scott and Young Thug in 2015.
(BB): What advice would you want to tell artists breaking into “scene”? Tips for emerging/existing creatives?
(TB): Make sure you love what you do and also be a sponge when it comes to new ideas and content.
(BB): What do you want to be remembered for?
(TB): Somebody who never ran out of ideas.
(BB): Any book/movie/podcast/etc recommendations?
(TB): Movies: Radiant child, Fear And Loathing in Las Vegas, Michael Jordan to the Max, Paris is Burning.
(BB): If you were stuck on a deserted island, what 3 things would you bring?
(TB): A yacht, food, and a radio.
(BB): Your favourite artwork and/or favourite quote?
(TB): “Fall seven times, stand up eight” -Dwayne Wade.
And right now my favourite designer is Takahiro Miyashita.
